Stand Against Racism - Schedule of Events 2021
Racism is a Public Health Crisis
This year, our Stand Against Racism Campaign centers around the theme of Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis.
Public health is, and always has been, central to racial justice work. This year our theme is especially pertinent as our nation continues to face the intersecting public health crises of COVID-19 and racism.
Join us from April 22 – 25, 2021, as we hold virtual events, share information, advocate, and more with a common goal in mind. Understanding the economic and social determinants of health and how racism impacts public health outcomes. We see this critical work as necessary to uprooting systemic inequity in communities of color.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Thursday, April 22: Join us in a virtual town hall as we discuss the connections between racism and public health outcomes, how to implement public health practices to effectively identify and address racial injustice in our communities, and community engagement and public policy strategies to advance racial equity through a public health lens. Register today for a powerful event uplifting the voices of public health professionals, advocates, and trailblazers doing the work to improve the future for people of color!
Friday, April 23rd: Monica Williams Harris and Mandi Clay have been friends for over ten years and have learned a LOT from each other about race issues. A few years ago they decided to have these conversations publicly, and the outcome was amazing! Participants asked REAL and TOUGH questions about race and got frank answers from Monica & Mandi. Join them for another brave and frank conversation about inter-racial relationships, discrimination, and inclusion. Come prepared to ask the questions you have always had but never wanted to say out loud!
Friday, April 23rd: Social Justice Hangout - Stand Against Racism EditionOur Social Justice Hangout Hour hosted by Tre Williams, YWCA Racial Justice Advocate + RJC Member. Saturday, April 24th: Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” chronicles how our justice system has been driven by racism from the days of slavery to today’s era of mass incarceration. The film is named for the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery with the exception of punishment for crime. Today, the United States accounts for 5 percent of the world’s population, but 25 percent of its prisoners. In 2020, more than 2 million people were incarcerated in the United States—of those, 40 percent were Black even though they only make up 13% of the population. On this Saturday during Stand Against Racism, we challenge you to watch the film and then to take some time to reflect on your learning by utilizing this discussion guide.
Sunday, April 25th - 3 pm: We close this year's campaign with a guided meditation practice followed by a discussion on race-based stress, intergenerational trauma, and their impacts on health. This event will be led by Racial Justice Advocate + RJC Member, Tre Williams.
